Poland introduces new rules for phone use in schools

President of Poland has signed a law that restricts the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices in kindergartens and primary schools. The new rules will come into effect on September 1, 2026.

The ban applies to public and private primary schools. Children will not be allowed to use smartphones during lessons, breaks, and educational activities that take place beyond the school premises.

However, students are not prohibited from bringing their phones with them. Schools may arrange special storage areas for the devices and specify the procedures for their use in their internal regulations.

The law provides for several exceptions. A phone may be used with the teacher's permission for educational tasks, knowledge assessment, or emergency contact with parents.

Special permits may be granted to children who need such devices for health reasons, due to disability, or other specific needs. The ban does not apply in the event of a threat to life, health, or property.

During school trips and residence in boarding facilities, the procedures for phone use will be defined by the educational institutions themselves. In lyceums, technical secondary schools, and other upper-level schools, there will be no nationwide ban, but administrators must set their own rules.

In the event of a violation, schools may take disciplinary measures, lower behavior grades, or impose other sanctions prescribed by their article of association. Educational institutions must align their internal documents with the law by the end of 2026.
