Earthquake in Japan: death toll continues to rise

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in southwestern Japan has risen to at least 25 people. Another 86 residents were injured, five of them are in serious condition. Several deaths are still being checked for a connection with the natural disaster.

The earthquake occurred on July 28 in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The Japan Meteorological Agency estimated its magnitude at 7.1. The epicenter was at a depth of about 10 kilometers, and in the most affected area a maximum seismic intensity of 7 on the Japanese scale was recorded.

Rescuers continue to clear rubble and search for missing persons. Among the most seriously damaged objects are a shopping center in the city of Kashima, where an explosion occurred after evacuation, and a paper factory in Yatsushiro, on whose territory a chimney collapsed.

The earthquake damaged residential houses, roads, and utility infrastructure. Thousands of people remain without electricity and water, more than 9,000 residents have been placed in evacuation centers. Some victims are afraid to return home due to ongoing aftershocks.

Rescue operations are being complicated by extreme heat. Authorities warn of the risk of heatstroke among people in shelters, vehicles, and tents, and are sending drinking water and cooling equipment to the affected areas.

Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaiichi instructed government agencies and local authorities to focus on rescuing people, assessing damage, and restoring essential services. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned residents of the possibility of new strong tremors.
