Iran demands Europe not support US operations
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi demanded that European countries clarify their position regarding the use of military bases and other infrastructure located on their territory for US operations against Iran.
As reported by Reuters, the head of Iran's Foreign Ministry raised this issue during talks with his European counterparts. Tehran is seeking guarantees that European territory, airspace, and military facilities will not be used by Washington to conduct attacks.
Iranian authorities believe that providing a foreign state with bases or infrastructure for a military operation could mean the host country's actual participation in the conflict. Tehran warns that states providing such support to the US may bear responsibility for the consequences.
Araghchi also called on European governments to help stop the fighting and increase diplomatic pressure on Washington. Iran insists that a settlement is possible only after the cessation of American strikes.
The appeal to European countries came after a new escalation between Tehran and Washington. The US Central Command reported the completion of a large-scale wave of strikes on dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facilities. The targets included command centers, missile and drone systems, coastal surveillance sites, and naval military infrastructure.
The American side called the operation a response to Iran's attempt to attack US military facilities in the region. According to Washington's claim, the missiles launched at American forces were intercepted.
The United Kingdom previously allowed the US military to use British bases for certain operations, which London calls defensive. Iran condemned this decision and said that providing territory for attacks against it violates international law.
Tehran has repeatedly warned that US military bases and facilities involved in the strikes will be considered as legitimate targets. At the same time, Iranian officials claim that they do not seek to expand the geography of the war but are forced to respond to US operations.
The latest exchange of strikes has heightened concerns about the further spread of the conflict to countries in the Middle East and Europe. Despite the escalation, mediators continue contacts between Washington and Tehran, but no significant progress has yet been made in stopping the fighting.
