Polish authorities explain why sirens were not activated everywhere due to missile

In the Lublin Voivodeship of Poland, air raid sirens sounded in only seven powiats, while ten others did not activate the warning system during the incursion of a Russian missile.

This was reported on August 3 by Lublin Voivode Krzysztof Komorski. According to him, too much time passed from receiving information about the threat to conveying the order to local authorities.

Komorski stated that the established procedures did not fail, but at one of the levels there were problems with decision-making. In particular, sirens were not activated in the Biłgoraj powiat, where on July 30 a missile fell near the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia. In the Kraśnik powiat, the warning was delayed because an employee tried to contact their supervisor.

The voivode admitted that the human factor remains a weak link in the system. To speed up response, part of the decision-making authority will be transferred to the Voivodeship Crisis Management Center.

The authorities of the region also intend to change the notification procedure after the all-clear. According to Komorski, residents should receive an SMS confirming the end of the threat, with an injunction to remain calm and a reference to an official source of additional information.

The missile fell in the Lublin Voivodeship on the morning of July 30 during a massive Russian attack on Ukraine. A crater about ten meters in diameter was formed at the site. Polish authorities stated that it was most likely a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile.
