US expands production of parts for Patriot and THAAD interceptors

The Pentagon has signed two seven-year framework agreements with L3Harris Technologies and Lockheed Martin, providing for a sharp expansion in the production of components for Patriot and THAAD interceptor missiles.

Under the first agreement, L3Harris must nearly triple the output of propulsion components for PAC-3 MSE missiles used in Patriot air and missile defense systems.

The company will produce dual-pulse solid rocket motors, attitude control motors, and special charges that increase the warhead's lethal radius.

The second agreement calls for a fourfold increase in the production of propulsion system components for THAAD systems. L3Harris manufactures launch solid rocket motors and liquid control systems for these missiles that help the interceptor correct its trajectory in the final phase of flight.

Both agreements span seven years. The final contracts are planned to be finalized by the end of 2026. The parties have not yet disclosed the value of the deals.

Production of the components will be concentrated at L3Harris facilities in the states of Arkansas, Alabama, and California. The company is also expanding plant floors and upgrading equipment to accelerate the output of rocket motors.

The increase in production capacity is expected to help the United States replenish its own interceptor stocks more quickly and fulfill allied orders. However, the agreements do not specify what portion of the new missiles or components may be intended for Ukraine.
