Quarantine introduced in two districts of Zaporizhzhia due to dangerous pest

The quarantine regime has been introduced in the Khortytskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts of Zaporizhzhia due to the detection of the brown marmorated stink bug. The pest is capable of damaging dozens of species of agricultural and ornamental plants.

The head of the Zaporizhzhia District State Administration signed the relevant orders No. 97 and No. 98 on July 16, 2026. Later, changes were made to the document on quarantine in the Khortytskyi district.

This concerns phytosanitary quarantine, which is introduced for localization and elimination of pest outbreaks. It does not provide for restrictions on the movement of residents.

In quarantine zones, territory inspections and treatment of infested areas with permitted preparations must be carried out. Movement of plants and plant products infested with the pest is allowed only after decontamination.

The brown marmorated stink bug damages more than 100 plant species. Among them are apple, pear, cherry, grapes, raspberry, corn, wheat, soybeans, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers.

The insect pierces fruits, leaves, and young shoots, after which it sucks juice from them. Necrosis and deformations appear on damaged areas, fruits stop developing, fall off, or become unfit for sale.

The brown marmorated stink bug was first discovered in Zaporizhzhia in 2023. In subsequent years, quarantine zones were introduced in other districts of the city as well. The pest can spread with plants, cargo, wooden packaging, transport and luggage, and also independently fly over short distances.
