Iran's armed forces were preparing to strike Ukraine

Iran's Armed Forces prepared to strike three targets on Ukrainian territory following an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. This was stated by Mohsen Rezaei, Senior Military Advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader.

The statement by the Iranian official was circulated by the state-run Press TV channel. Rezaei did not specify which targets were considered.

He also did not say when the strikes were planned, what weaponry the Iranian army might have used, or why the prepared operation was not carried out. There is no independent confirmation of his words yet.

The statement came after an incident in the Caspian Sea on July 25. Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that Ukrainian forces attacked an Iranian commercial vessel. As a result of the explosion on board, one sailor was killed and another injured.

Tehran called the incident an act of aggression and summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires to express protest. The Iranian side also stated that it reserves the right to defend its national interests and security.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously reported successful long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea. According to him, Ukrainian forces hit a Russian warship and vessels used to transport military cargo linked to Iran.

Ukrainian authorities, however, have not publicly confirmed that the target of the operation was specifically a civilian Iranian vessel. The circumstances of the incident and the status of the targeted ship have not been independently established.
