Ukraine needs another €400 million to purchase gas for the winter

The additional need of Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC for financing natural gas imports amounts to €400 million. Ukraine is seeking international partners to help attract these funds.

This was announced by First Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal after a meeting with Ukrainian diplomats.

According to him, the final amount will depend on the scenario of the upcoming heating season. Currently, the government is working on finding partners who can finance the additional gas imports.

“According to various scenarios, the additional need of Naftogaz for financing gas imports is €400 million. We are now looking for partners who can finance these needs”, Shmyhal stated.

Securing gas is one of the key areas of preparing Ukraine’s energy system for the next winter. The government is also forming an emergency reserve of equipment for the rapid restoration of facilities that may be damaged as a result of Russian attacks.

In 2026, the energy ministry hubs have already received 5.7 thousand tons of international aid. At the same time, the government plans to create a triple reserve of critical equipment.

Separately, Ukraine is seeking abroad equipment that is already being decommissioned but can still be used at Ukrainian energy facilities. In particular, the country has received over 3.3 thousand tons of such equipment from heat and power plants in Lithuania and Germany. Deliveries from Latvia are also expected.

Shmyhal reported that the uncovered needs of the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine exceed €507 million. An additional €600 million is needed by Ukrainian energy companies to stabilize the electricity balancing market.

In September, Ukraine plans to hold the fifth ministerial meeting of the so-called energy “Ramstein.” At the meeting, partners are to discuss strengthening coordination and expanding international support for Ukraine’s energy system ahead of the heating season.
