Trump Did Not Promise Ukraine Additional Patriot Missiles: We need them ourselves

The U.S. President stated that the country has significant ammunition stockpiles, although they are limited in certain categories. At the same time, he did not promise Ukraine new missiles or Patriot systems.

U.S. President Donald Trump avoided a direct answer to the question of whether Washington would provide Ukraine with long-range missiles or additional missiles for Patriot systems.

"We need the missiles ourselves," Trump responded during a conversation with journalists at the White House on August 6.

The American president once again claimed that under Joe Biden's administration, a large amount of weaponry was provided to Ukraine free of charge. According to him, the cost of the ammunition was allegedly $300 billion, and now the U.S. is forced to replenish its own stockpiles.

Official statistics do not confirm the figure cited by Trump. As of March 31, 2026, total appropriations for support of Ukraine and war-related programs amounted to $195 billion. The U.S. directly allocated $67.8 billion for defense goods and services. Part of the total sum remained in the United States and went, in particular, to replenishing American arsenals and military needs in Europe.

Earlier, a journalist asked Trump why the Pentagon needed an additional $21 billion to replenish stockpiles if the administration denies a shortage of ammunition. The president replied that more weapons are always needed. He acknowledged that stockpiles of some types of ammunition are limited, but claimed a "practically unlimited" quantity of others.

Trump also reported that American defense companies are building new factories for the production of Patriot and Tomahawk missiles and other weaponry. In addition, the U.S. has ammunition stockpiles at its facilities in various countries and can use them if necessary.

Commenting on the intensification of Russian attacks, Trump stated that the United States is not directly participating in the war, but he seeks to stop the loss of life. According to his estimate, Russia and Ukraine together are losing about 25,000 people monthly, mostly military personnel. The U.S. president provided no independent confirmation of this figure.

Trump claims there is progress in negotiations to end the war, however he did not specify what exactly it consists of. The U.S. president added that he initially thought the Russian-Ukrainian war would be one of the easiest to resolve, but it turned out to be the hardest due to the strong animosity between the leaders of the two states.
