Ukraine may tighten penalties for traffic violations: Zelenskyy responds to petition and gives instructions to officials

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Security and Defense Council, requesting a comprehensive review of the issue of liability for systematic violators of the Traffic Regulations.

Thus the head of state responded to the electronic petition "Stop systematic traffic violators: road deaths must become a matter for the NSDC," which garnered over 25,000 votes.

The appeal was sent to NSDC Secretary Ihor Klymenko and Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi. They must consider the issues raised in the petition and inform its author of the results. No concrete legislative changes or new penalties have been approved at this time.

The author of the petition proposed revoking the driving privileges of systematically violating drivers, increasing liability for fatal accidents, expanding automated traffic enforcement, and implementing the Vision Zero principle aimed at reducing road deaths.

The petition was created following a traffic accident that occurred on June 5 near Karavaievi Dachi in Kyiv. Four people died in the crash, including a 12-year-old child and two police officers, and three others were injured. According to data provided by the petition's author, the driver had previously been recorded with 39 traffic violations.
