Ukraine's food imports rose by 8%: key goods and supplier countries
In January–June 2026, Ukraine imported agri-food products worth USD 4.704 billion. The cost of purchases rose by 8% compared to the first half of last year.
This was reported by leading researcher at the Institute of Agrarian Economics, Bohdan Dukhnytskiy, citing data from the State Customs Service.
The European Union provided over half of imports
The main suppliers of agri-food products remain the countries of the European Union. In six months, Ukraine purchased goods from the EU for USD 2.542 billion – exactly 54% of total agricultural imports.
Products worth USD 812 million, or 17.3% of the total volume, were imported from Asian countries. Latin America accounted for USD 379 million, and African countries – USD 256 million.
Poland was the largest individual supplier. The top ten countries provided 52% of the value of all of Ukraine's agricultural imports.
| Country | Import value |
|---|---|
| Poland | USD 568 million |
| Germany | USD 341 million |
| Turkey | USD 309 million |
| Italy | USD 221 million |
| Netherlands | USD 207 million |
| France | USD 199 million |
| Norway | USD 180 million |
| Romania | USD 161 million |
| Ecuador | USD 146 million |
| China | USD 136 million |
The most was spent on fruits, fish and beverages
The largest commodity category was fruits, berries and nuts. This mainly refers to citrus fruits, bananas and other exotic fruits. They were imported for USD 532 million – almost 13% more than last year.
Purchases of fish, crustaceans and mollusks also rose by 13% – to USD 501 million. In particular, frozen fish were imported for USD 233 million, which is 19% more than last year's figure.
Among large categories, imports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages increased most noticeably – by almost 25%, to USD 461 million. Spirits, wines and beer made up USD 342 million of this amount.
Purchases of dairy products, eggs and honey, mainly cheese, grew by 22% – to USD 214 million. Imports of animal feed and waste increased by 17%, to USD 264 million.
At the same time, the value of imported vegetables decreased by 30% – to USD 247 million. Ukrainian companies mainly bought tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, potatoes and sweet peppers abroad. Supplies of cocoa products contracted by 8%, to USD 243 million.
At the Institute of Agrarian Economics, the overall increase in the value of imports is explained by increased purchases from EU countries and an expansion in supplies for most major product groups.
About 80% of imported food comes to Ukraine via land routes, which currently face lower logistical risks. Therefore, by the end of 2026, the value of agricultural imports may set a new record.
