Fire breaks out and detonations begin at ammunition plant in Bulgaria, people are being evacuated
A fire broke out at the "EMKO" military plant near the village of Belitsa in Bulgaria, after which ammunition began to detonate. The plant personnel and residents of the surrounding area are being evacuated.
According to the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior, there are no dead or injured. To alert the population, the authorities activated the national alert system BG-ALERT.
What is known about the explosions
The incident occurred on the morning of August 10 on the territory of the enterprise in the Tryavna municipality. According to preliminary reports, a truck first caught fire, after which explosions were heard in part of the warehouse premises.
According to unconfirmed data, one of the workshops is completely destroyed. The fire is spreading towards the village of Radoyevi, but currently there is no direct threat to neighboring settlements.
Local authorities have called on residents to close windows, use protective masks and not go outside due to possible smoke and air pollution. Environmental services have been sent to the area to take measurements.
Prosecutor's office launches investigation
The factory area has been cordoned off by firefighters and law enforcement. After the danger is eliminated, investigators plan to examine the scene, check the plant's documentation and establish the cause of the fire.
The Gabrovo District Prosecutor's Office has opened criminal proceedings. Investigators have already begun interviewing witnesses. The "EMKO" company stated that it does not consider human error to be the cause of the incident, but there are no official conclusions yet.
