Kyiv region prepares new rules for gas stations during air alerts

Additional safety measures are being prepared for gas stations and complexes in Kyiv region. They plan to introduce automated air alert warning systems, update staff action algorithms, and improve access for visitors and workers to shelters.

The relevant measures were discussed at a meeting chaired by the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko. It was attended by representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Police, the State Emergency Service, and gas station market operators.

One of the main decisions should be the introduction of automated warning systems at gas stations and clear protocols for staff response to an air alert signal. Their task is to enable faster direction of workers and visitors to safe places.

Another problem concerns vehicles that remain on the station premises for a long time. According to Tkachenko, such cars can block evacuation routes, hinder access to fire hydrants, and impede the passage of rescue and other special equipment.

The specific mechanism for clearing gas station territories of abandoned cars is planned to be brought to the next meeting of the Kyiv Region Defense Council. Thus, it is currently about preparing solutions—the final procedure has not yet been approved.

Separately, the regional authorities intend to address the availability of shelters. Special attention is planned to be paid to gas stations that are at a significant distance from existing protective structures. How exactly new shelters will be equipped or access to existing ones will be ensured, has not been specified yet.

The need for additional safety measures is being discussed against the backdrop of ongoing Russian attacks on fuel infrastructure. Ukrnafta previously reported drone strikes on its gas station complexes and indicated that protective structures, staff shelters, drone detection systems, and other threat response measures are being installed at the facilities.
