New Starlink rules for Poland may affect volunteer terminals in Ukraine
SpaceX is changing the terms of use for Starlink accounts registered in Poland. The changes could complicate the operation of private and volunteer terminals that were purchased in Poland and are being used in Ukraine.
Poland has been removed from the list of countries in the so-called European Starlink zone. As a result, Polish accounts will be treated as intended primarily for domestic use, while trips to other European countries will require additional registration.
The new rules are already in effect for customers who signed up after July 14. For other users, they will come into force on August 17.
Owners of Polish accounts who use the equipment abroad will have to notify SpaceX about the trip and upload a passport or another document with a photo. After prolonged use of the terminal outside Poland, additional verification, a change of the country of registration, or a switch to a more expensive international plan may also be required.
The changes could potentially affect private and volunteer terminals with Polish accounts operating in Ukraine under roaming. However, this does not mean they will be disconnected automatically: users may be offered the opportunity to undergo verification or change their tariff plan.
According to media reports, the restrictions are not supposed to apply to terminals that the Polish government has centrally purchased and transferred to Ukraine. Such equipment is serviced under separate state and corporate contracts.
Poland has provided Ukraine with tens of thousands of Starlink kits and continues to pay for their operation for the Armed Forces, critical infrastructure facilities, and civilian institutions.
SpaceX has not officially explained why Poland was removed from the European service zone. Among the possible reasons, media outlets cite the company's attempt to limit the resale of terminals purchased in Poland and their use outside the country of registration.
