Samsung Repurposes U.S. Plant for Energy Storage Batteries Amid Weak EV Demand

South Korea's Samsung SDI has acquired a 49.99% stake in the joint venture SynergyCells with General Motors and has become the sole owner of the battery plant under construction in Indiana. Meanwhile, the companies agreed to jointly develop the next generation of batteries for electric vehicles.

The facility in New Carlisle will be the first fully controlled Samsung SDI battery manufacturing base in North America. Construction of the plant began in 2024.

Initially, Samsung SDI and GM planned to invest about $3.5 billion in the joint project. The plant was expected to produce up to 27 GWh of EV batteries per year, but the partners revised the cooperation format due to slower-than-expected growth in demand for electric cars.

After completion of construction, Samsung SDI plans to primarily use the plant for the production of batteries for energy storage systems. The company aims to take advantage of the rapid growth of the U.S. energy storage market, demand for which is increasing along with the development of renewable energy and data centers.

Despite GM's exit from the joint venture, the companies continue to cooperate. Samsung SDI and the U.S. automaker have signed a separate agreement to develop next-generation prismatic battery cells.

The future batteries should have high energy density and support fast charging. They could be used in upcoming GM electric vehicle models, and later, production of such cells might be arranged at the Indiana plant.

Samsung SDI explained that the stake acquisition takes into account changes in the EV market and, at the same time, allows for maintaining a strategic partnership with General Motors.
