Spotify will mark AI artists and not recommend them to listeners, AI personas will lose editorial and algorithmic recommendations
Spotify will start marking artist profiles whose public persona is created with the help of artificial intelligence and does not represent a real person. Their music will not be included by default in editorial and algorithmic recommendations.
From mid-September, the AI Persona badge will appear on such profiles. It will be shown in the banner, the artist info section, search results, and next to tracks in playlists.
AI persona tracks will not appear in personalized recommendations and editorial playlists on Spotify. An exception is made for listeners who have consciously followed such an artist.
Artists can already self-report via Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI persona. However, the platform will not rely solely on voluntary disclosure.
Spotify will check profiles where the name, photos, and general public image may be created by artificial intelligence. At the first stage, the company will focus on artists who have already reached a set audience threshold.
If the badge is added as a result of Spotify's check, the profile owner will receive a notification and can voluntarily confirm the AI persona status or appeal the decision. In the coming months, listeners will also be allowed to report suspicious profiles to the platform.
The company emphasized that the badge applies specifically to the artist's persona, not the way the music is created. Using AI for writing, recording, or processing an individual track does not in itself mean the artist will receive AI Persona status.
To disclose the use of artificial intelligence directly in the creation of tracks, Spotify uses separate AI Credits and SongDNA tools.
