The earth trembles again near Pisa: after a magnitude 3.7 shock, people were evacuated from buildings

The northern coast of Tuscany is again shaken by a series of earthquakes. On the morning of August 12, a magnitude 3.7 shock occurred in the sea near Pisa, also felt in the areas of Lucca, Livorno and Massa-Carrara.

According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology INGV, the main shock occurred at 10:57 a.m. local time at a depth of about 9 km.

Italy's La Nazione reports the evacuation of some buildings and people coming out onto the streets after the earthquake. No reports of serious damage or injuries have been received so far.

After the main jolt, the ground continues to tremble

The seismic activity did not end there. Just two minutes later, INGV recorded a magnitude 2.2 shock. New earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 and 2.8 then followed in roughly the same area.

The epicentres are located off the northern coast of Tuscany – near one of Italy's most popular tourist zones. August is the peak season here: tourists flock to Pisa, Lucca, Viareggio and the beaches of the Tuscan coast.

Tourist sites are currently operational

At present, there are no reports of the closure of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pisa Airport or coastal resorts due to today's tremors. There is therefore no reason to cancel trips yet.

However, recurring tremors make residents and holidaymakers pay close attention to announcements from local authorities and INGV. Seismologists cannot predict in advance whether the next tremor will be the last or whether the sequence will continue.
