Russian Defense Ministry threatens Ukraine with "freeze" in winter; the Ukrainian Armed Forces react (Updated)
The Russian Ministry of Defense posted a threatening message addressed to Ukraine on its official Telegram channel with the words "In winter you will have a 'freeze'". Attached was an image of Shahed-type combat drones with the caption "Like snow on the head".
The message of the Russian department was published as a response to a previous post about strikes on Ukrainian ports and naval vessels. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that on the evening of August 13, drones in the Black Sea allegedly struck two sea tugs that were escorting dry cargo ships to Ukrainian ports.
The Russian ministry also announced a strike on the night of August 14 on the railway infrastructure of the port of Izmail. Moscow's claims that the struck vessels were used to transport Western weapons and the specific military use of the facilities have not been independently confirmed.
Combining the phrase about a "freeze" with an image of combat drones can be seen as a threat to continue or intensify air attacks on Ukraine as cold weather approaches. At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry's message does not directly mention strikes on energy infrastructure, power or heating outages.
The phrase also has a political subtext against the backdrop of discussions about ending hostilities. Ukraine previously proposed a full and unconditional ceasefire along the actual front line. In June, Ukraine's representative to the UN Andriy Melnyk called such an option already a significant compromise from Kyiv.
In addition, on August 13 it became known about a new Ukrainian proposal to Russia - on civilian vessels in the Black Sea. According to Reuters, Kyiv conveyed it through a third party, and Moscow had not provided a response at the time of publication. Therefore, the Russian post about a "freeze", placed right under the message about strikes on ships and port infrastructure, may be perceived as a demonstrative mockery of de-escalation ideas. However, this post has not been announced as an official Kremlin response to any of the Ukrainian proposals.
Earlier Current Ukraine wrote that Western experts assume an increase in Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in winter. Among potentially vulnerable facilities they named energy, railway, water and other critical infrastructure.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces Responded to Russia’s Threat
The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Strategic Communications Directorate responded to a threatening statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense about “freezing” Ukraine this winter. The Ukrainian military published an image of a burning industrial facility with a brief response:
"We’ll warm ourselves with the fire of Russian oil refineries."
In this way, the Ukrainian Armed Forces effectively hinted at continued strikes against Russian oil refining infrastructure. In recent months, oil refineries in Russia have repeatedly been targeted by drone attacks, leading to the shutdown of certain units and a reduction in oil refining capacity.
