Estonia investigates Russia's possible involvement in fire at supplier of equipment to Ukraine
Estonian authorities are investigating Russia's possible involvement in a fire in a building used by the defense company Milrem Robotics. The company develops unmanned ground vehicles and supplies its equipment to Ukraine.
Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Michal reported this on August 18. According to him, the circumstances of the incident are now being determined by the competent services.
At the same time, there are no final conclusions about the cause of the fire and a possible Russian trace yet. Russia's involvement is considered as one of the versions that requires confirmation during the investigation.
Milrem Robotics supplies unmanned equipment to Ukraine
Milrem Robotics is an Estonian developer of robotic and autonomous military systems. One of the company's most well-known developments is the tracked unmanned platform THeMIS.
Such unmanned ground vehicles are used for transporting cargo and ammunition, evacuating the wounded, engineering tasks and performing other operations where the use of equipment reduces risks to military personnel.
Milrem Robotics systems have been used in Ukraine since 2022. The company continues to develop its unmanned platforms based on lessons from the Russian-Ukrainian war and cooperates with the Ukrainian defense industry.
Russia has previously shown interest in Estonian ground robots used by the Ukrainian military. After THeMIS appeared in Ukraine, the Russian Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies announced a monetary reward for capturing such a machine in working condition.
Investigation continues
Estonian authorities now need to establish the immediate cause of the fire and find out whether there are grounds to link the incident to Russia's actions. At the time of the Prime Minister's statement, there were no public data that would confirm a Russian sabotage.
Therefore, the version of Russia's involvement remains a subject of investigation, not an established fact.
