In Kyiv, a second high-profile traffic accident in several days: a car crashed into a bus stop, there are fatalities
In the Solomianskyi District of Kyiv on the morning of August 19, a fatal traffic accident occurred. A Volkswagen collided with a shuttle bus and then crashed into a public transport stop where people were standing.
According to preliminary information from the Kyiv police, the accident occurred at approximately 8:50 AM. Law enforcement officers report that the Volkswagen driver collided at full speed with a shuttle bus, after which the car drove into a bus stop with people.
There are dead and injured as a result of the accident. The police have not yet specified the exact number of victims.
At the scene, an investigative-operational group of the capital's main directorate for traffic accident investigation, patrol officers, and medics are working. Law enforcement officers are establishing the circumstances and mechanism of the accident.
This is already the second high-profile traffic accident in Kyiv in the last several days. On August 17, in the center of the capital, two BMW cars collided, after which one of them flew off onto a summer terrace of an establishment on Velyka Vasylkivska Street. At that time, no visitors or passers-by were injured, but one of the drivers was injured.
As reported by "Ukrainska Pravda" citing sources in law enforcement agencies, the participants of that accident were the director of the football development department of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) Bohdan Horodniuk and the former "watcher" for Lukianivska Prison Kyrylo Ostrovskyi. Later, the police reported that the driver of a BMW X3, pulling out from a secondary road, did not comply with road sign requirements and collided with a BMW X7, after which his car flew onto the terrace.
Another high-profile fatal accident occurred in Kyiv on June 5. At that time, a Mercedes-Benz driver lost control at speed and crashed into an underground pedestrian crossing where people were present. Kurs Ukrainy reported that as a result of the accident four people died - two men, a woman, and a 12-year-old boy. Three more people were injured.
According to the prosecutor's office, the 49-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver had been repeatedly brought to administrative responsibility for speeding before this accident. In addition, he was already a participant in four traffic accidents, two of which occurred in 2026.
The series of high-profile accidents is taking place against the backdrop of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' plans to strengthen control over speed limit compliance. Kurs Ukrainy previously wrote that special patrol cars "Phantom" are to return to the roads, and the network of automatic speed violation recording will be expanded with new complexes.
In particular, from August 20, Ukraine is expected to launch another 50 automatic recording cameras. After their launch, the total number of such complexes will increase to 426.
