The National Police has stated the number of missing persons and unidentified bodies
In Ukraine, about 17 thousand bodies remain unidentified, and approximately 114 thousand civilians and military personnel are currently considered missing. Such data was released by the National Police of Ukraine.
New figures were cited by the acting head of the National Police, Maksym Tsutskiridze, during a meeting with representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine.
According to him, the scale of work of law enforcement officers in the context of a full-scale war has significantly increased. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, police have documented about 200 thousand war crimes.
At the same time, one of the biggest challenges remains determining the fate of missing persons and identifying the deceased. According to current data from the National Police, about 114 thousand civilians and military personnel are being searched for as missing, and approximately 17 thousand bodies have not yet been identified.
The Ukrainian police plan to strengthen this work through technology and international cooperation. During the meeting with Japanese partners, the parties agreed to expand the exchange of experience in criminal investigation, the use of modern technologies, professional training of police officers, and humanitarian demining.
One of the next stages will be the participation of Ukrainian law enforcement officers in the JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program. It includes a study visit to Japan and practical exchange of experience in investigations, management, and the use of advanced technologies.
The National Police notes that since the beginning of the full-scale war, it has been a beneficiary of three comprehensive international technical assistance projects supported by the government of Japan. Ukrainian law enforcement officers have received forensic equipment, vehicles, drones, tactical gear, computer equipment, and rapid DNA analysis systems.
It is rapid DNA analysis technologies that are used to accelerate the identification of the deceased. Japan has already assisted Ukraine with equipment and mobile forensic laboratories capable of conducting research directly during police work.
Current Ukraine previously wrote that more than 16 thousand civilians were considered missing as a result of Russian aggression. The current statistics from the National Police are broader, as they include both civilians and military personnel.
