Five European leaders arrive in Kyiv for Independence Day

Heads of state and government from Britain, Estonia, Luxembourg, Moldova, as well as European Council President António Costa, arrived in Kyiv on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day. This was reported on social media by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, according to Європейська правда.

Sybiha greeted at the capital's railway station the presidents of Moldova and Estonia – Maia Sandu and Alar Karis, Prime Minister of Luxembourg Luc Frieden and European Council President António Costa.

The new head of the British government, Andy Burnham, also arrived in Kyiv. This is his first foreign visit as prime minister.

The leaders arrived in Ukraine to participate in celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukrainian independence.

"For Ukraine, independence is not an abstract idea. We have defended it despite all difficulties. In such times, nations realize how important it is to have allies on their side. And today we know exactly who our true friends are", – wrote the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

As reported by the British government, during his stay in Kyiv, Andy Burnham will take part in Independence Day events and co-chair his first meeting of the "coalition of the willing" to discuss how Britain can continue to support Ukraine. In addition, the Prime Minister will announce the transfer of SCALP missile production technology to Ukraine.

We remind that Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the arrival of "distinguished guests" and new bilateral aid packages from partners on August 24.

The day before, the leaders of Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania arrived in Kyiv on August 23 for a meeting of the Nordic-Baltic Eight.
