Ukraine to receive additional €6.1 billion for air defense and missile weapons
On August 24, the European Commission approved new defense procurements for Ukraine worth €6.1 billion as part of the EU's €90 billion loan; the funds will go to air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition and radar stations. The European Commission press service announced this on Monday, according to Європейська правда.
The European Commission's approval of new procurements complements already approved plans worth €16 billion, of which €8.35 billion has already been allocated to Ukraine as part of the "defense" portion of the €90 billion support package.
"On Ukraine's Independence Day, Europe demonstrates that our support is unwavering and concrete. Today we approved €6.1 billion for air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition and radar stations that Ukraine urgently needs. While Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up efforts to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its airspace. Europe stands in solidarity with Ukraine, and we will provide what is needed, when it is needed", – emphasized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Most procurements will be made from EU defense companies. Given Russia's increased use of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, the European Commission emphasizes the need for a substantial increase in supplies from the EU by reducing stockpiles, reprioritizing orders and ramping up production.
Early media reported that by the end of 2026 the European Union is expected to pay Ukraine about €20 billion, with new tranches possibly arriving as early as the coming weeks.
On July 30, the European Commission transferred another €3.47 billion to Ukraine as part of the defense portion of the €90 billion loan.
In turn, the EU Council on April 30 approved an updated reform plan under the Ukraine Facility, which will allow Ukraine to receive €8.3 billion in 2026 to cover budget needs.
