The largest underground hospital in Ukraine will be built near the front line
Near the front line in Ukraine, construction preparations are underway for an underground hospital costing €2.5 million. According to the Dutch foundation Protect Ukraine, it will become the largest medical facility of its kind in the country and will allow surgeries for wounded soldiers even during attacks.
The project is being implemented by Protect Ukraine together with the Norwegian foundation HMM Healthcare at the direct request of the military medical service of Ukraine.
The hospital will be completely located underground at a depth of about eight meters. The total area of the facility will be 600 square meters.
The complex will have several operating rooms and conditions for the simultaneous work of multiple surgical teams. Reinforced concrete structures should allow medics to continue working even during missile and drone attacks.
The project organizers note that changes in the nature of the war and the massive use of drones and precision weapons have made above-ground stabilization points and hospitals near the front line increasingly vulnerable.
Placing operating rooms closer to combat should reduce the transportation time for the severely wounded by tens or even hundreds of kilometers. At the same time, it should reduce the burden on hospitals located further from the front.
The total cost of construction, including medical equipment, is estimated at €2.5 million. Protect Ukraine and HMM Healthcare plan to finance the project equally, each covering half of the required amount.
Currently, Protect Ukraine has already raised €750,000 in donations from Dutch donors. Fundraising continues.
By plan, the underground hospital is expected to be operational by February 2027.
