Brazil fines TikTok for violating child data protection
Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has fined TikTok owner ByteDance 153.7 million reais - approximately $29.9 million - for violations of rules on processing personal data of children and adolescents.
The decision was published on August 25. In addition to the fine, the regulator ordered the company to delete data collected in violation and to implement a plan to strengthen protection of underage users.
ANPD identified five violations of Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD). They concern both registered account users and people who browse TikTok without registration.
According to the regulator, TikTok processed personal data of children and adolescents without proper legal basis, and the platform's mechanisms did not sufficiently prevent such processing.
As part of the plan, TikTok must automatically set the strictest privacy settings for users under 16, enhance parental controls and content filtering.
For users without an account, the company must completely remove advertising in Brazil, limit personalization and the amount of data collected. Also, live streaming, messaging and some other features will be unavailable in this mode.
ByteDance can appeal the decision within ten working days. The dollar amount is based on the exchange rate as of August 26, 2026.
