South Korean K9 self-propelled howitzers enter the Western European market for the first time
South Korean defense company Hanwha Aerospace has signed a contract with Spain's Indra Sistemas for the supply of K9 self-propelled artillery systems and related equipment. The company called the deal the first entry of the K9 into the Western European market.
Hanwha announced the contract on August 31 in a regulatory disclosure. The company did not reveal the number of systems, total value of the deal, or delivery schedule, citing confidentiality conditions.
It is known that after the contract is signed, Hanwha will receive an advance payment of 20% of its value. Another 5% is to be paid by the end of 2026.
After the Spanish deal is implemented, the number of countries operating or having ordered the K9 artillery system will increase to 11. Among European operators of this platform are already Poland, Finland, Norway, Estonia, and Romania.
Spain to localize new artillery
The current contract is a continuation of the arrangements between Hanwha and Indra signed in March. At that time, the companies signed a binding agreement for the joint development of a family of self-propelled artillery systems for the Spanish Armed Forces based on the K9 platform.
The Spanish project involves significant production localization and technology transfer. Indra plans to manufacture vehicle hulls in Spain, as well as integrate its own mission management, communications, situational awareness, and battle management systems.
In March, Indra reported that the program includes 128 tracked artillery vehicles, 120 ammunition resupply vehicles, 11 command post vehicles, and 21 recovery vehicles. However, the companies did not specify which part of this program is covered by the contract announced on August 31.
To create a production base, Indra plans to invest about 130 million euros in new industrial facilities, particularly at its plant in Gijón. The company estimated that the project will create about 500 direct and 1,000 indirect and related jobs.
K9 expands export geography
The K9 is a South Korean 155mm tracked self-propelled artillery system designed for rapid firing with position changes after completing a fire mission. Hanwha has been actively expanding its presence in the international market in recent years, particularly among NATO countries.
The entry into the Spanish market comes shortly after another important Hanwha contract. In August, the company announced a deal with the US Army for the supply of six prototypes of the wheeled version of the K9 Mobile Howitzer for the US mobile artillery program.
