In Perm, one of the key Russian rocket engine manufacturers caught fire

In the morning of September 2, a large-scale fire broke out on the territory of the Proton-PM enterprise in Perm, Russia, which specializes in the production of liquid rocket engines and their components. The fire covered about 2,100 square meters.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported a fire at an industrial enterprise in the Novye Lyady district. According to the agency, one of the production workshops was burning. More than 80 people and 28 pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire.

The fire was localized at 07:56 local time, and later rescuers reported the elimination of open burning. According to official data, there were no casualties. The cause of the fire is being established.

In the Ministry of Emergency Situations report the name of the enterprise was not specified. At the same time, local publics, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the fire broke out on the territory of Proton-PM. Astra geolocated the footage published from the scene and concluded that it was indeed filmed on the territory of this plant.

JSC Proton-PM is part of the integrated structure of NPO Energomash of the Roscosmos state corporation and is one of the Russian manufacturers of liquid rocket engines.

The enterprise previously serially produced engines for the first stage of Proton launch vehicles. Now it manufactures key components and assemblies of the RD-191 engine for the Angara launch vehicle family and is expanding capacities for their serial production.

It is at the Novye Lyady site that the company is developing a new production complex for RD-191 and other rocket and space technology. Angara is used, in particular, for launches of spacecraft in the interests of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

There is currently no data on the extent of equipment damage and the possible impact of the fire on the production capacity of Proton-PM.
