NBU has been increasing foreign currency sales for the fourth consecutive week
The National Bank of Ukraine sold $1.329 billion on the interbank foreign exchange market from August 31 to September 4. The volume of currency sales has been growing for the fourth week in a row, and interventions have exceeded $1 billion for the eighth consecutive week.
This is according to data from the National Bank on the results of foreign exchange interventions.
Over the past week, the NBU increased currency sales by $56.8 million, or about 4.5%. From August 24 to 28, the regulator sold $1.272 billion.
At the same time, the central bank did not purchase currency on the interbank market last week. Thus, net sales also amounted to $1.329 billion.
Currency sales have been rising for four weeks
After a decline in interventions in early August, the National Bank has been increasing foreign currency sales for four consecutive weeks.
From August 10 to 14, the regulator sold $1.101 billion, the following week – $1.194 billion, from August 24 to 28 – $1.272 billion, and from August 31 to September 4 – already $1.329 billion.
Meanwhile, the NBU has been selling over $1 billion per week for eight weeks in a row. The series began on July 13-17, when interventions amounted to $1.074 billion. Since then, the weekly figure has never fallen below one billion dollars.
Since the beginning of 2026, according to NBU data as of September 4, the regulator sold $33.863 billion on the foreign exchange market and bought only $2.3 million. Thus, net currency sales approached $33.86 billion.
Foreign exchange interventions remain the NBU's main instrument for balancing demand and supply on the market under the managed exchange rate flexibility regime.
