In Russia's largest port, a fuel oil terminal burned after an attack (Updated)
In Russian Novorossiysk, during the massive drone attack on the night of September 9, fires broke out on the territory of several enterprises. One of the largest fires was recorded at the Novorossiysk fuel oil terminal, which operates as part of Russia's largest maritime transport hub.
This was reported by Astra, local authorities, and monitoring channels.
Novorossiysk Mayor Andrei Kravchenko announced the drone attack at night and later confirmed fires on the territory of several enterprises, as well as near a residential building. Russian authorities claim that the fires were caused by falling drone debris.
Videos shared by eyewitnesses showed several large fires and thick black smoke in the area of the city's industrial and port infrastructure.
The Novorossiysk fuel oil terminal was on fire
OSINT analyst Astra geolocated footage of one of the largest fires and determined that the fire occurred directly on the territory of the Novorossiysk fuel oil terminal.
The monitoring channel Exilenova+ also reported damage to port complex facilities. According to its data, at least one tank was damaged at the fuel oil terminal. Videos of explosions in the port area and the subsequent large-scale fire appeared online.
In addition, NASA's FIRMS satellite system recorded several fires in Novorossiysk throughout the night.
The Novorossiysk fuel oil terminal is one of the key enterprises of the local transport hub. It is used for storage and transshipment of fuel oil and other petroleum products and is connected to the infrastructure of the Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port, Russia's largest seaport by transshipment volume. The terminal's design capacity is about 4 million tons per year.
Local authorities did not specify which other enterprises were affected and how serious the damage to their infrastructure is.
The main strike hit Novorossiysk
In the morning, Krasnodar Krai Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that the main strike during the night attack hit Novorossiysk.
According to him, five multi-apartment and three private houses, an Orthodox church, and a kindergarten were also damaged in the city. Four people, including a child, were killed, and 29 others were injured. Three of the wounded are in serious condition.
In Anapa, according to Russian authorities, three more private houses and a kindergarten were damaged. The consequences of the attack were also recorded in the Krymsky and Temryuksky districts of Krasnodar Krai.
Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed that during the night it intercepted and destroyed 596 drones over Russian regions, occupied Crimea, and the Black Sea. There is no independent confirmation of this figure. The total number of drones involved in the attack was not disclosed by the Russian agency.
At the time of publication, the Ukrainian side had not officially reported hitting targets in Novorossiysk.
