Dollar strengthens despite active interventions by NBU
On Wednesday, September 9, immediately after trading started on the interbank foreign exchange market, non-cash dollar quotes began to rise and by 12:00 reached 44.715 UAH on the 'bid' side. In less than 2 hours, the non-cash dollar became 0.5% more expensive.
The National Bank increased the pace of its foreign exchange interventions and so far managed to stop the growth around 44.66-44.70 UAH. The euro on Ukraine's interbank market also rose on Wednesday, following the dollar, and from a starting 51.79 UAH climbed to 52.03 UAH on the 'bid' side by 12:00. On the international currency market FOREX, the euro today is fluctuating between 1.1621 and 1.1649 dollars, i.e., about 10-15 points higher than yesterday.
Cash dollar prices are also rising following the increase in non-cash dollar value, but growth rates differ for different cities. If on Tuesday afternoon Kyiv's wholesale exchange offices sold dollars at 44.66-44.68 UAH, today by lunchtime it is at 44.73-44.75 UAH. In Lviv, dollars are sold at 44.72 UAH, in Mykolaiv – at 44.75 UAH, in Kropyvnytskyi, Khmelnytskyi and Dnipro – at 44.80 UAH, in Poltava – at 44.90 UAH. Ukrainian banks by 12:30 are selling dollars at prices from 44.72 UAH in the Kyiv branch of Poltava-Bank to 45.15 UAH in Zaporizhzhia's Metta Bank. As for the euro, at the moment it can be bought cheapest at 51.97 UAH in some Poltava-Bank branches in western Ukraine.
Oil prices continue to rise and have already exceeded $100. The price of the most popular Brent grade today rose to $100.93 per barrel. Currently, Brent is trading in the range of $100.40-100.70 per barrel.
High volatility is observed on cryptocurrency exchanges: prices of major cryptocurrencies rise and fall without any clear pattern. Thus, Bitcoin (BTC) on the popular Binance exchange rose to $79,760 per coin this morning, and Ethereum (ETH) – to $2523.30 per coin. Currently, Bitcoin is sold at $79,065-79,095 per coin, and Ethereum at $2485-2495 per coin.
