Russia hits warehouse of one of Ukraine's largest pharmaceutical distributors
Russian troops attacked a warehouse of one of Ukraine's largest pharmaceutical distributors, the company "BaDM", in Odesa. The premises sustained significant damage, and a fire broke out on the territory. Since the beginning of September, this is the fourth large pharmaceutical warehouse to come under Russian attack.
The attack was reported by "Ekonomichna Pravda" citing sources in the pharmaceutical market. The warehouse is located in the Khadzhibey district of Odesa. After the strike, a fire broke out, which is being extinguished by rescuers.
According to preliminary information from the publication's sources, no people were injured. However, the warehouse premises received significant damage. The scale of product losses and the impact of the attack on drug supplies have not yet been reported.
"BaDM" is one of the country's largest pharmaceutical distributors. According to the company itself, it supplies medicines to more than 18 thousand pharmacies and medical institutions, and the total area of its pharmacy warehouses exceeds 60 thousand square meters. The company has regional structural units throughout Ukraine.
This is not the first loss for "BaDM" due to the war. The company reported that in the first weeks and months of the full-scale invasion, it lost about 45% of its warehouse capacity. In particular, a logistics complex was completely destroyed, replaced by a new warehouse in the Kyiv region in 2022, and in Poltava, the company's warehouse capacity was destroyed by a drone attack.
Fourth strike on pharmaceutical warehouses in September
The current attack continues a series of strikes on the key infrastructure of Ukraine's pharmaceutical market.
On September 3, a Russian attack damaged the "Biocon" logistics complex in the Boryspil district of Kyiv region - one of the country's largest specialized pharmaceutical warehouses. It stored, among other things, drugs from international manufacturers.
On the night of September 8, two Russian ballistic missiles attacked the "Optima-Pharm" warehouse in Kyiv. This facility had already been destroyed by a Russian strike in 2025.
On September 13, the Universal Logistic warehouse in the Kyiv region came under attack - another of the country's largest pharmaceutical logistics complexes. The next target was the "BaDM" warehouse in Odesa.
Pharmaceutical market is already restructuring drug supplies
Even before the current attack, market participants warned that the destruction of large pharmaceutical warehouses forces companies to change their entire model of drug import and storage. After the strike on "Biocon", "BaDM" CEO Dmytro Babenko said that instead of large stocks for two to three months, some imported drugs will go directly to distributors in smaller batches.
As of September 12, there was no global drug shortage in Ukraine. The director of the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health, Edem Adamanov, noted that short-term local disruptions are possible, but for most drugs there are alternative suppliers or analogues. However, strikes on large logistics centers increase the burden on supply chains and reduce companies' ability to maintain significant reserves of medicines.
According to market participants cited by "Ukrainska Pravda", the total losses of the pharmaceutical industry from warehouses destroyed and damaged by Russian strikes could already amount to tens of billions of hryvnias. Currently, the state does not insure pharmaceutical and logistics companies against such war risks.
