Syzran Refinery Again Hit: Fire at Plant

On the night of September 15, several regions of Russia reported attacks on industrial and warehouse facilities. Using OSINT analysis, Astra determined that in Samara Oblast the Syzran refinery of Rosneft came under attack, where a fire broke out. Explosions were also reported at a cement plant in Volgograd Oblast and consequences of a missile attack in Taganrog.

Consequences of the attacks are reported by Astra, Russian regional officials and monitoring channel Exilenova+.

In Samara Oblast, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev claimed a drone attack. According to him, Russian air defense allegedly intercepted over 40 drones, but one industrial enterprise was damaged. Also, windows were broken in several residential buildings. The official did not report any casualties.

The governor did not name the damaged enterprise, but later Astra established from eyewitness videos that the Syzran oil refinery was attacked. OSINT analyst of the publication geolocated footage of fire on the territory of the enterprise. At least one of the fire sources is located in the tank farm.

Syzran refinery is part of Rosneft and is one of the largest oil refining enterprises in Samara Oblast. The plant produces gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, mazut, bitumen and liquefied hydrocarbon gases. It processes about 7-8.5 million tons of oil per year.

This is far from the first attack on the facility in recent months. According to Astra, previous strikes on Syzran refinery were recorded on August 8 and 4, July 12, and also in May and April. After the July attack, the enterprise completely stopped oil refining.

A series of explosions also occurred in Volgograd Oblast this night. According to Exilenova+, they took place at the territory of JSC "Sebryakovcement" in Mikhaylovka. Prior to this, missile and drone danger was declared in the area. After the explosions, smoke was seen over the enterprise, fire brigades arrived at the site.

Separately, Russian authorities reported a massive missile attack on Taganrog in Rostov Oblast. Governor Yuri Slyusar claimed several fires and damage to warehouse and commercial infrastructure. He named warehouses of agricultural enterprises, an Ozon warehouse, a store and a commercial building among damaged objects. A gas pipe and glazing of residential buildings were also damaged.

Mayor of Taganrog Svetlana Kambulova later reported three fire sources. According to her clarified data, glazing of five multi-apartment and three private houses is damaged. Russian authorities did not claim fatalities or injuries.

Meanwhile, Exilenova+ reports that one of the likely targets of the missile strike was Beriev Taganrog Aviation Scientific Technical Complex, where military aircraft are repaired and modernized. Later the channel reported a significant thermal anomaly in the area of industrial enterprises in Taganrog, recorded by NASA FIRMS satellite fire monitoring system.

In Kursk, a fire also broke out after an air attack. Astra reported that after drone debris fell, cars parked near car dealerships caught fire. Local publics also wrote about damage to three private houses, but at the time of the report there was no official confirmation of this information.

Thus, during the night, reports of attack consequences came from at least Rostov, Samara, Volgograd and Kursk regions of the Russian Federation. The most significant confirmed industrial target was Syzran refinery, which has repeatedly been hit over the past months.
