US First Confirms Deployment of Weapons in Space
The US has for the first time publicly confirmed that it already has space control weapon systems in orbit. Their mission is to protect American military forces from adversary actions, but the Pentagon does not disclose either the type or the number of these systems.
US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink stated this at the Air, Space & Cyber conference in Maryland, according to American specialized publications Breaking Defense, Defense News, and Air & Space Forces Magazine.
"The United States now has on-orbit space control means capable of protecting the joint force from hostile adversary actions", Meink said.
Breaking Defense calls his words the first public confirmation by a US government official that the US has already deployed weapon systems directly in Earth orbit. Air & Space Forces Magazine characterizes the statement as the Pentagon's most direct admission to date of American offensive capabilities in space.
Meink emphasized that the phrase "on-orbit space control weapons" was chosen deliberately. While talking to journalists after his speech, he noted that the phrase was "very well thought out."
However, the secretary declined to explain which specific systems are involved. He did not clarify whether they are kinetic — that is, capable of physically destroying targets — or use non-kinetic means of influence. The Pentagon also did not report how many such systems are in orbit or when they were launched.
In American military terminology, "space control" encompasses both the protection of one's own and allied space systems and actions aimed at denying an adversary the ability to use its space assets. Such capabilities could theoretically include both physical destruction systems and means of electronic or other non-kinetic influence.
Meink explained the deployment of new capabilities by the growing threats to American satellites. According to him, the US has been observing for more than a decade the development by China and Russia of technologies capable of threatening American space systems.
"It is critical that we maintain dominance not only in the air but also in space. Therefore, we had to take measures so that in the event of a threat, we could defend ourselves", the secretary said.
He added that public acknowledgment of the existence of such systems should serve as a deterrence function. At the same time, revealing their characteristics, methods of use, or conducted tests, according to him, could weaken this effect.
In recent years, the American military has gradually begun to speak more openly about the possibility of combat in space. The US Space Force already defines achieving space superiority as one of its primary combat missions, and American officials regularly warn about the development of anti-satellite weapons by Russia and China.
At the same time, the systems confirmed by Meink should not be equated with space interceptors, which the US is separately developing for the Golden Dome missile defense system. During the same speech, the secretary reported that the space interceptors program has already reached the stage of flight-ready equipment, but their deployment is a separate project.
