Russia continues attacks on the railway: passenger train "Kyiv-Mykolaiv" under attack

On the morning of September 16, Russian troops attacked passenger train No. 122 Kyiv - Mykolaiv. Thanks to an early warning from the monitoring team of Ukrzaliznytsia, the locomotive and train crews, as well as passengers, managed to be evacuated.

This was reported by Ukrzaliznytsia, noting that Russia continues "hunting for passenger trains".

According to the company, no people were injured as a result of the attack. For passengers, jointly with Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, bus transfers are being organized so that they can continue their journey.

Videos with the consequences of the strike are also being circulated on social networks. The published footage shows a damaged locomotive that was pulling the passenger train. Ukrzaliznytsia has not yet specified the extent of damage to the rolling stock.

This is not the first recent Russian attack directly on passenger railway transport. On September 9, a railway station in Izium community of Kharkiv region was hit by a drone, where cars of a passenger electric train were damaged and people were injured. The day before, Russian troops also attacked passenger trains in other regions of Ukraine.

The scale of strikes on the railway has significantly increased this year. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated on September 15 that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian attacks have damaged or completely destroyed more than 500 Ukrainian locomotives. More than half of them were hit just since the beginning of 2026.

According to Sybiha, Russia systematically attacks railway infrastructure, trying to disrupt logistics throughout Ukraine. Against this background, Kyiv has appealed to partners for help in finding locomotives compatible with the 1520 mm gauge, as well as to provide funding to accelerate purchases of new equipment.

The Ukrainian railway remains critically important for passenger transportation, evacuation of people from front-line areas, and transportation of goods, including grain and other commodities.
