EU prepares a record expansion of sanctions against Russia's military-industrial complex

The European Union is preparing a massive expansion of sanctions against Russia's military-industrial complex. The new list proposes to include 1,576 individuals and legal entities linked to the Russian defense industry.

The new proposal was presented by the European External Action Service on September 16 at a meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of EU member states (COREPER), reports "European Pravda" citing its own sources in the European Union.

The list includes new individuals and legal entities who, according to the publication's sources, are connected with the Russian defense industry and support Russia's war against Ukraine. The new package is intended to supplement the already existing EU sanctions regime imposed over actions threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine.

If the proposal is agreed upon at its current scale, it will be the largest single expansion of this sanctions list since its establishment in 2014, writes "European Pravda".

At the same time, the sanctions have not yet been approved. The next stage will be a technical analysis of the proposal in the relevant working group of the Council of the EU. After that, the revised list is to be submitted again to the ambassadors of EU member states for further agreement.

Official materials of the Council of the EU confirm that at the COREPER meeting on September 16, proposals from the EU High Representative for amendments to the sanctions regime concerning actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine were considered. A detailed list of 1,576 entries is not currently published in open Council documents.
