Kyiv orders 20 Turkish generators worth hundreds of millions of hryvnias for backup power
Kyiv's "Energy Security Service" has ordered 20 powerful diesel generator sets of Turkish production for a total of 422.96 million hryvnias. The equipment is to be delivered to the capital by the end of December 2026.
The contract with LLC "Compressors International" was concluded by the municipal non-profit enterprise of the KMDA on September 14. It concerns sets manufactured by Turkey's Aksa Power Generation with power ranging from 1.128 to 2 MW.
The largest part of the order consists of seven AKSA AC2500 generators with a power of 2 MW each and seven AC2000 sets with a power of 1.6 MW. In addition, Kyiv will receive one set with a power of 1.34 MW and five generators of 1.128 MW each.
The total nominal power of all ordered sets will be approximately 31.2 MW.
The five smallest generators are to be delivered by December 15, and the rest of the equipment by December 25, 2026.
Detailed terms of the agreement are currently not disclosed for security reasons. According to the procurement conditions, the documents are planned to be opened 90 days after the end of martial law.
The specific cost of the purchased sets, depending on the model, is approximately $273-297 thousand per 1 MW of power. "Our Money" compared these indicators with other purchases of large generators in 2026 and came to the conclusion that the prices are within the range of previous contracts.
In particular, in the spring the Restoration Agency purchased Turkish generators with a power of 1.1-1.3 MW for approximately $221-252 thousand per 1 MW. In other procurements of sets with a power of 1-2.2 MW, the price ranged from approximately $174 thousand to $349 thousand per 1 MW.
Financing of the current procurement is carried out from the authorized capital of the enterprise. The generators were purchased without open tenders - a special procedure allows such purchases for the prevention or elimination of the consequences of emergencies and for the implementation of comprehensive resilience plans of regions.
The "Energy Security Service" was created in its current format in 2026 as the sole operator of the city fund of autonomous power sources. The enterprise must account for, store, and service generators, as well as promptly deploy them at facilities that remain without electricity.
In the KMDA, it was previously explained that the structure should strengthen the capital's ability to respond to energy threats. In addition to its own procurement, Kyiv has received generators from foreign partners throughout the year and installed cogeneration units at critical infrastructure facilities.
