BYD recalls over 183,000 vehicles due to brake pedal defect

Chinese automaker BYD is recalling 183,211 Qin and Tang series vehicles due to a manufacturing defect in a brake pedal component. The campaign started immediately and covers cars produced between 2014 and 2022.

The recall was announced by the State Administration for Market Regulation of China (SAMR). The reason is a problem with the material of the brake pedal's limiter pad in certain production batches.

After prolonged use, this element may crack and deteriorate. In extreme cases, the pad can detach, causing the vehicle's brake lights to remain on even when the driver is not pressing the brake pedal.

The regulator notes that this could send incorrect signals to drivers behind and create a risk of an accident. However, the announcement does not mention any loss of braking ability.

The largest part of the campaign involves the new-generation Tang DM - 77,846 vehicles produced from May 2018 to January 2022. Another 58,026 units of the base Tang series were manufactured between 2015 and 2018.

BYD is also recalling 7,023 Tang EV electric vehicles produced from December 2018 to October 2021, and 40,316 Qin cars that rolled off the assembly line between 2014 and 2019.

Authorized BYD dealers will replace the faulty limiter pads with improved parts free of charge. Vehicles that have already had this component replaced will not require additional repairs.

The company will notify owners of the recall by mail, phone, and SMS. In China, owners can also check if their vehicle is included by VIN code through the SAMR recall center system.
