A new 24-hour border crossing point with Romania is being opened

The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to open a new international automobile border crossing point "Bila Tserkva - Sighetu Marmației" on the Ukrainian-Romanian border in Zakarpattia Oblast. At the first stage, it will operate on temporary infrastructure and allow passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons.

The corresponding resolution No. 1130 was adopted by the government on September 17. The new crossing point will have a permanent mode of operation and will work around the clock.

They will not wait for the full completion of construction to launch it. Until the works are finished, clearance of passengers and vehicles will be carried out within the construction site using the already created temporary infrastructure.

The government instructed the State Border Guard Service and the State Customs Service to ensure the operation of their units at the new crossing point.

At the end of July, the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development reported that the preparation of "Bila Tserkva - Sighetu Marmației" had reached the final stage. At that time, access roads, transport lanes and control zones had already been arranged, the Tysa riverbank had been reinforced, electricity and water supply, telecommunications and other engineering networks had been installed.

The ministry explained that the minimally necessary infrastructure allows starting the clearance of passenger cars before the completion of the entire complex of construction works. After the implementation of the first stage, the estimated throughput capacity of the crossing should be up to 700 cars per day.

Work on the creation of the crossing lasted several years. Back in August 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a draft agreement with Romania on the opening of the "Bila Tserkva - Sighetu Marmației" point, and in the spring of 2024 the government separately announced the preparation of a decision necessary for the launch of the new checkpoint.

The new crossing should increase the throughput capacity of the Ukrainian-Romanian border and partially relieve the existing automobile crossing points. It is located near the bridge crossing over the Tysa between Bila Tserkva in Zakarpattia Oblast and the Romanian Sighetu Marmației.
