Meta AI Agent Got More Downloads Than ChatGPT at Launch

Meta's new personal AI agent Muse gained more downloads in its first 12 days after mobile launch than the ChatGPT app did in the same period following its debut, according to estimates from analytics firm Apptopia cited by TechCrunch.

For a fair comparison, analysts considered only iPhone downloads in the US and Canada during the first 12 days after each app's launch. During that period, Muse got 1.8 million downloads versus 1.3 million for ChatGPT.

This limited sample is necessary due to different launch strategies. Mobile ChatGPT was initially available only on iOS, while Muse launched for both iPhone and Android from the start. The geographic scope of the launches also differed.

If all mobile platforms are counted, Muse had about 2.8 million installs in its first 12 days. The app also climbed from second to first place in the overall US App Store ranking.

Meta's new app also beat early mobile ChatGPT in active audience. According to Apptopia, Muse had about 642,000 daily active users in the US versus 231,000 for ChatGPT at the same post-launch stage.

Even when comparing only iOS, where conditions are closer, Muse had about 359,000 daily active users and also topped ChatGPT at a similar stage.

At the same time, Apptopia's data are third-party estimates: the analytics firm does not have access to Meta's internal statistics. Meta itself has not yet published official download and active audience figures for Muse.

The growth of the new service may be helped by Meta's ecosystem. According to Apptopia, more than 95% of Muse users also use Facebook, and 63% use Instagram. The AI agent also integrates with WhatsApp, giving Meta the opportunity to promote it to audiences on its largest platforms.

Meta introduced Muse on September 8. The service is positioned not just as a chatbot but as a personal AI agent capable of performing everyday tasks by connecting to the user's email, calendar, payments, and other services. Meta later also released a Mac version of Muse and added the ability to make calls to businesses.
