Average diesel price in EU sets historic record

The average price of diesel fuel at service stations in the European Union has risen to a record 2.23 euros per liter. Just a week ago it was 2.16 euros, meaning that in seven days the fuel became about 3.2% more expensive.

This was reported by ANSA citing an AFP analysis based on national data published by the European Commission.

According to these data, new diesel price highs have been recorded in already 19 EU countries, particularly in Germany, France, and Italy. The European Commission's statistics on petroleum product prices have been available since 2005, so the current figure is the highest for at least this period.

The European Commission updates data on gasoline and diesel prices in EU countries weekly. National authorities submit figures on Wednesday, and the new issue of the Weekly Oil Bulletin is published every Thursday. The data for September 24 already include current prices with and without taxes for all European Union countries.

At the beginning of September, the European Commission noted that there is no immediate threat of shortage of oil and petroleum products in the EU. Demand for diesel is covered thanks to increased production at European refineries and alternative supplies from external markets. At the same time, Brussels warned that instability in the Middle East and seasonal demand growth in autumn and winter could further increase market tension.
