Russia struck a passenger train near Sumy twice

Russian forces on September 8 deliberately attacked the Kyiv-Sumy passenger train with two Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles as it approached the regional center. The passengers and railway workers were evacuated from the train in advance, so according to preliminary data, there were no casualties.

The attack was reported by Ukrzaliznytsia and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

According to Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia, the monitoring team detected the threat in advance and stopped the train. Passengers, the train crew, and the locomotive crew managed to leave the train before the strikes. After that, people began to be transported to their destinations by buses.

The State Emergency Service reported that the attack caused a fire, which rescuers extinguished. In total, they evacuated 90 people. Two buses from the State Emergency Service and two more buses from local authorities were involved in transporting passengers.

Community rescue officers also joined the evacuation, coordination of actions, and assistance to passengers. According to preliminary information, no one was injured as a result of the attack.

Russia regularly attacks passenger trains

This is not the first recent Russian attack on passenger rail transport in Ukraine.

On August 13, during a night attack on Odesa region, a Russian Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle hit the locomotive of the Dnipro-Odesa passenger train. The driver and his assistant were killed as a result of the strike.

Before the attack, Ukrzaliznytsia specialists detected a drone threat, and the locomotive crew continued to drive the train to a place where passengers could safely leave the cars. All 340 passengers and train crew members were evacuated, with no injuries among them.
