Ukraine's Chief Rabbi criticized Markovich's surety for Mudra
Yonatan Markovich's proposal to take former deputy head of the Presidential Office Iryna Mudra on surety does not reflect the position of the entire Jewish community. This was stated by Ukraine's Chief Rabbi Moshe Reuven Asman, according to РБК-Україна .
"Rabbi Markovich's statement about his readiness to act as a surety was his own initiative and is not the position of the Jewish community as a whole", - emphasized Moshe Reuven Asman.
According to him, when someone during a high-profile trial mentions his religious status, people perceive it as exploiting the authority of a religious community.
"I consider such mixing of roles erroneous and categorically do not support it", - noted Ukraine's Chief Rabbi.
Answering a question from RBC-Ukraine, Moshe Reuven Asman added that he categorically condemns the wave of anti-Semitism that arose in connection with Yonatan Markovich's decision.
"No act by an individual rabbi gives anyone the right to insult the Jewish people, spread anti-Semitic stereotypes, or blame an entire community. Replacing reasoned criticism with hatred based on nationality has nothing to do with justice", - he pointed out.
According to Moshe Reuven Asman, in the conditions of a full-scale war Ukrainians must unite, not seek reasons for mutual discord.
"Religious leaders must strengthen unity, support people, and promote public understanding, and not involve religious communities in political and judicial confrontations. The law must be the same for everyone. Responsibility must be personal. Anti-Semitism can have no justifications", - summed up Ukraine's Chief Rabbi.
Trial of Mudra
We remind, Ukrainian law enforcement suspects former deputy head of the Presidential Office Iryna Mudra of participation in a criminal scheme aimed at legalizing illegally obtained funds and then using them as bail for former energy minister Herman Halushchenko.
At the court hearing on August 24, Kyiv's Chief Rabbi Yonatan Markovich was present. He asked to take the defendant on surety.
Today, August 25, the court imposed on Mudra a measure of restraint in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail in the amount of 20 million hryvnias.
