On Friday morning, September 4, the EUR/USD pair is trading in a narrow range of 1.1622-1.1633 dollars. Yesterday, the euro rose slightly and consolidated above the 1.16 level.

Today, economists are focused on the key US labor market statistics. The main event of the day will be the release of the US Labor Department's Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report, which traditionally can cause sharp movements in the EUR/USD pair.

Economists expect that in August US employers increased employment by about 56,000 jobs after an unexpected decline of 23,000 in July. The unemployment rate is forecast to remain around 4.1%. Average hourly wages are expected to grow by about 0.3% month-on-month and 3% year-on-year.

Preliminary labor market signals appear mixed. In particular, according to ADP, private sector employment in the US grew by only 38,000 in August, below market expectations of 47,000 and the lowest since January.

Therefore, investors today will assess not only the NFP figure itself, but also the unemployment rate, wage dynamics, and revisions to previous months' data.

If actual job growth is significantly above the forecast 56,000 and wages show steady growth, this may strengthen expectations of tighter Federal Reserve policy. In that case, US bond yields could rise, and the dollar would be supported. For EUR/USD this would mean downside risk.

A weak report scenario, on the contrary, could put pressure on the US currency. If NFP comes in well below expectations, and unemployment rises or wage growth slows, the market may again increase expectations of Fed monetary easing. In this case, the euro will have a chance to continue growing against the dollar.

The market's reaction to the combination of indicators is particularly important. For example, a relatively small increase in jobs by itself may be perceived as positive for the euro, but if wage growth accelerates at the same time, the dollar's reaction could be the opposite.
