New family of affordable electric vehicles from Volkswagen Group has already collected more than 100 thousand pre-orders. Especially high was the demand for the Volkswagen ID.Polo - this model alone was ordered by about 30 thousand buyers, although the car has not even appeared in dealerships yet.

Volkswagen stated that the number of orders, primarily for the ID.Polo in Germany, significantly exceeded the company's expectations. Due to high demand, the concern decided to ramp up production capacities faster than planned.

Back in mid-July, Volkswagen reported more than 70 thousand orders for the new Electric Urban Car Family, of which about 25 thousand were for the ID.Polo. Thus, in less than two months, the total number of orders increased by at least 30 thousand.

Four affordable electric vehicles

The concern's new electric family includes the Volkswagen ID.Polo and the compact crossover ID.Cross, as well as the Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval. The models are being developed jointly within the Brand Group Core and will be produced at the concern's plants in Martorell and Pamplona, Spain.

More than 80% of the components of these vehicles are shared. Volkswagen estimates savings from joint development and production of the four models at approximately €600 million. This unification is expected to help the concern reduce the cost of electric vehicles and strengthen its position in the lower price segment.

ID.Polo starts from €24,995

The ID.Polo has become a key model of Volkswagen's new strategy in the affordable electric vehicle segment. In Germany, the base version with a 37 kWh battery costs from €24,995 and can travel up to 334 km according to the WLTP cycle. For versions with a larger battery, the claimed range reaches 454 km.

The electric Polo is built on the updated MEB+ platform and has front-wheel drive. Volkswagen positions the model as one of the main tools for expanding the mass market of electric vehicles in Europe.

Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer called the initial sales results "a strong signal for affordable electromobility from Europe". The high initial demand is especially important for the concern in light of increased competition from Chinese manufacturers in the budget segment of the European electric car market.
