Debris of unknown drone found in Germany near military airbase
Police in Germany are conducting a large-scale search operation after debris of an unknown drone was found near Hanover. The drone parts were discovered about 800 meters from the Bundeswehr Wunstorf Air Base, home to Germany's entire fleet of Airbus A400M military transport aircraft.
The debris was found on uninhabited terrain east of Lake Steinhude in Lower Saxony. Police were notified of the discovery in the afternoon of Monday, September 14, after which some of the drone fragments were collected.
On Tuesday, September 15, law enforcement launched extensive searches near the town of Neustadt am Rübenberge. The operation is coordinated by the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA).
Police are combing a broad area to locate remaining parts of the device. Investigators also hope to find information that could identify the drone's owner or operator.
The exact number of officers involved has not been disclosed. The LKA attributed the scale of the search to the large area that needs to be examined.
According to a preliminary assessment by the authorities, there is no danger to the public. The incident is currently officially treated as a measure to prevent a possible threat. Police have not reported any explosives on the drone or signs of a targeted attack.
Special attention was drawn to where the device was found. According to Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, the drone presumably crashed in the Wunstorf peat area, just about 800 meters from the Wunstorf military airfield.
However, the LKA stressed that the discovered parts were not located on the airbase grounds. Authorities have not stated that the drone was connected to the military facility or was spying on it. The device's origin, model, and cause of the crash are still unknown.
Wunstorf Air Base is vital for German military airlift capabilities. It hosts Luftwaffe Air Transport Wing 62. In April 2026, the Bundeswehr completed assembling its Airbus A400M fleet, with all 53 aircraft operated by Germany stationed there.
A400M aircraft are used for strategic and tactical transport, medical evacuation, and air-to-air refueling. The Bundeswehr considers this aviation system the backbone of German airlift capabilities.
The search for drone fragments and investigation into how it ended up near Wunstorf continue. German law enforcement has not yet said whether they are considering the possibility of a deliberate flight near the military facility.
