Iran wants to reach a deal with the US before the midterm elections - Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Tehran wants to reach an agreement with the United States before the US midterm elections, which will take place in November. This concerns Washington's return to the memorandum of understanding concluded by the parties in June.

Pezeshkian said this during a brief meeting with journalists from NBC News and other media on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"We do not want the matter to come to the midterm elections", - stated the President of Iran.

According to him, Tehran would like the US to return to the memorandum before the vote.

Pezeshkian was referring to the agreement between the US and Iran, signed in June. It provided for a temporary ceasefire and further steps to resolve the conflict, but later ceased to be in effect.

The statement by the Iranian president came against the backdrop of a different assessment of the timing of possible negotiations by Donald Trump. During his speech at the UN General Assembly, the US president said that he expects an agreement with Iran only after the midterm elections. According to Trump, Tehran allegedly is waiting for the results of the vote in the US.

Pezeshkian actually denied this interpretation, making it clear that Iran is not interested in postponing the agreement until November. At the same time, his statement does not yet mean the resumption of negotiations or the achievement of a new agreement between the parties.
