Washington proposed a new trilateral meeting of Ukraine and RF in UAE - Zelensky
The United States has proposed holding a trilateral meeting of representatives from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia in the United Arab Emirates. The talks are expected to be at the technical level, but the specific date has not yet been determined.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said this during a conversation with journalists on September 25.
According to him, the initiative to hold talks in the trilateral format belongs to the American side. Ukraine has agreed to prepare for such a meeting and now awaits proposals from Washington regarding its date.
"Regarding the trilateral meeting, the American side proposed preparing it and meeting in a trilateral format at the technical level", - said Zelensky.
The United States proposed the UAE as the meeting venue.
This is not about negotiations between presidents, but about a meeting of working groups. Earlier, Zelensky explained that such a format could be used to prepare agreements and create a basis for further negotiations at the leaders' level.
The day before, the President noted that Ukraine and the United States had already discussed the possibility of trilateral technical talks. At the same time, he stated that Kyiv does not yet see the readiness of the Russian side to move to such a format.
After Zelensky's meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York, separate talks were held by the Ukrainian and American teams. The parties discussed possible steps for de-escalation and further negotiation formats.
According to Zelensky, after these consultations, the American side was supposed to conduct its own contacts with Russia and other partners. Kyiv and Washington agreed not to publicly disclose some details until receiving a response from the Russian side.
The trilateral format is one of three directions currently being discussed by Ukraine and the United States for possible movement toward a ceasefire. The other two are agreements on halting strikes on energy infrastructure and a possible ceasefire in the Black Sea.
