Russian strikes knocked out Kyiv data center Cosmonova
Kyiv data center DC|Cosmonova will no longer work due to extensive damage caused by Russian strikes. The company continues to migrate some services and restore their operation on another infrastructure.
Cosmonova reported this, publishing photos of the damaged facility.
The company stated that the scale of destruction does not allow further operation of the data center. Specialists continue to localize the consequences of the strikes, partially move equipment, and restore services.
At the same time, access to the facility remains partially restricted by the relevant services even for Cosmonova technical specialists. Because of this, the company cannot yet provide full information about the condition of client equipment that was inside the data center.
The destruction of the facility was preceded by at least two strikes. After the first attack, the company reported infrastructure damage, but later the data center was hit again.
After that, problems arose in service operation and the backbone network was damaged. At that moment all company employees were safe, and access of technical specialists to the facility was limited due to the work of the State Emergency Service.
Cosmonova then began restoring services from the backup infrastructure. After assessing the scale of destruction, the company concluded that the data center itself would not be restored.
This is happening against the backdrop of a series of Russian attacks on Kyiv's telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
On September 23, strikes damaged data centers and equipment of a number of capital internet providers. The Ministry of Digital Transformation reported that due to the consequences of the attack, internet access problems in Kyiv and the region arose in about 100,000 households.
The next day, the data center housing the infrastructure of hosting provider MiroHost was destroyed. The company reported that it could not name the restoration timeline for the Ukrainian site, while most of its foreign customers continued to receive services.
On September 25, a Russian strike also damaged the Kyiv data center of telecommunications company Datagroup. In this case, client data was preserved, and services were switched to backup sites.
Thus, over several days, Russian strikes successively hit a number of facilities hosting critical infrastructure for internet, hosting, and digital services.
