Ukraine receives new NASAMS and air defense missiles - Zelensky

Ukraine has received a NASAMS air defense system and a package of missiles for it from American and Norwegian partners. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this amid another massive Russian attack.

In his address on September 29, the president thanked the United States and Norway for the NASAMS and missiles for the system. He separately noted France and Germany for the missile support provided to Ukrainian air defense in recent days.

Zelensky emphasized that in light of daily Russian attacks, Ukraine needs constant replenishment of air defense systems.

The statement came after a nighttime combined attack, during which Ukrainian air defense forces, in particular, intercepted Russian ballistic missiles. According to the Air Force, on the night of September 29, Russia used two Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and one Tsirkon/Oniks anti-ship missile.

The Air Force reported the downing of all three missiles. In addition, Russia launched 152 drones of various types, of which 82 were Shahed jet drones. In total, as of 08:00, air defense shot down or suppressed 109 aerial targets, including 106 drones.

However, the military did not specify which systems were used to intercept the ballistic missiles, so there is no basis to link the night interceptions directly to the new NASAMS.

The need for additional air defense missiles remains one of Ukraine's key requests to partners ahead of winter. During a meeting with the leaders of Norway and Finland on September 23, Zelensky spoke about the need to maximally strengthen air defense and protect energy infrastructure against winter Russian strikes.
