Mobilized Hasid to serve as medic in Odesa instead of Kharkiv region - media

49-year-old Hasid Yonatan Karlinski, who holds Ukrainian and Israeli citizenship and was detained while attempting to leave Ukraine after a trip to Uman, is planned to be assigned to military medical service in Odesa. Earlier Israeli media reported that he was to serve in the Kharkiv area.

The Jerusalem Post reports the change of duty station. According to the publication, the decision was made after negotiations involving the chief rabbi of Odesa and southern Ukraine, Avraham Wolff, and representatives of the Ukrainian military command.

Karlinski is to be transferred to a medical center in Odesa located near the local Jewish community. There he will be able to continue serving in a medical specialty while observing religious rules. The community promised to provide him with kosher food and access to a synagogue, mikveh, and other necessary services.

This story began after Rosh Hashanah celebrations in Uman. As previously reported by "Kurs Ukrainy", Israeli media reported Karlinski's detention at the Ukrainian-Romanian border and his subsequent mobilization.

The State Border Guard Service then clarified that the man, in addition to Israeli, has Ukrainian citizenship and was in databases as a wanted military serviceman. Border guards handed him over to National Police officers. The SBGS separately emphasized that border guards do not conduct mobilization measures directly at checkpoints.

Several days later, Israeli media reported that Karlinski was already undergoing the military service registration procedure and was to be assigned as a medic to a unit near Kharkiv. His relatives claimed that they failed to secure release from service, particularly because of his medical training and previous experience serving in the Ukrainian army before moving to Israel.

Now, according to The Jerusalem Post, the duty station has been changed: instead of Kharkiv region, Karlinski is to work at a medical center in Odesa. The publication calls this a result of negotiations with military authorities and the intervention of Jewish community representatives.
